Google Fit preview sets stage for fitness apps on Android

Google previews SDK so mobile devices and wearables are better at gathering and using fitness data

Want to measure heart rate or weight? Google can help you.

The company previewed Google Fit software tools so developers can start writing fitness applications for mobile and wearable devices. The tools will allow programs to talk to sensors, record data and share information with other programs or cloud-based fitness services.

The SDK (software developer's kit) paves the way for more "more interesting features in your app like personalized coaching, better insights, fitness recommendations and more," Google said in a blog entry on Thursday.

Wearables are playing an important role in fitness with the ability to track steps or measure vital signs. Through Google Fit tools, smartphone users will be able to access fitness data from a wearable device. The tools will also allow apps to track runners or help design more effective diets based on fitness information.

Google Fit was originally announced at the Google I/O conference. A final version of Google Fit APIs (application programming interfaces) is expected later this year, Google said on the Google Fit preview page.

The developer tools will work with Android Wear and the latest preview version of Android L on Nexus devices. The APIs and installation instructions are available on Google Fit's preview page.
