EMC Forum 2014: Different workloads require different technologies

Technology vendor sees the current and future workload requirements being met by the hybrid Cloud.

A new IT agenda is needed to support businesses for today and tomorrow, and EMC sees it stemming from the changing workload landscape.

When looking at the world from a workload perspective, EMC A/NZ vice president and managing director, Alister Dias, said there are now a multitude of workloads.

There are also applications that have “completely different requirements” in terms of performance, scale, and resilience.

“There is no one piece of technology that can satisfy the needs of these workloads,” Dias said.

“IT needs to understand the profile of these workloads and ensure that the right technologies are deployed for the business needs of today and tomorrow.”

The organisations of today want immediate access to low cost, elastic compute, storage and network infrastructure, and Dias said it is not enough to meet them halfway.

“The devil is in the detail, and we need to understand the detail around the workloads,” he said.

A hybrid approach

In today’s business environment, he said the IT industry needs to be able to provide infrastructure that can deal with today and tomorrow’s requirements.

By that, Dias means it needs to provide end users with a choice of devices, the ability to self-serve, and standard service levels that are aligned with business policies.

“Transparent pricing in terms of what those services cost is key, as well as the ability to move workloads potentially off-premise into the public Cloud whenever it makes sense,” he said.

From a EMC perspective, Dias said a well-run, hybrid Cloud can meet all of the above objectives and requirements.
