Nimble challenges EMC and NetApp with Adaptive Flash

Nimble delivers all-flash and hybrid flash on a single platform

Flash storage company, Nimble, has challenged hybrid flash vendors, EMC and Netapp, with the launch of its new Adaptive Flash Platform.

Nimble Storage, director of marketing and technology, Gavin Cohen, said the new CS700 Series Array and All-Flash shelf had the ability to combine all flash arrays with hybrid flash on a single platform.

"Flash is completely pervasive in the storage industry and has been for the last five years," he said.

"About 90 per cent of storage sold today by all the vendors has some amount of flash in it.

"Each vendor has a different slant or architecture, while 80 per cent of the market is hybrid.

"But what is absolutely certain is that flash is part and parcel of every storage system being sold."

Cohen said, at the very highest level, he was seeing flash all the way into the server from the likes of Fusion-io.

But below that vendors like EMC, Netapp and HP were dominating the hybrid market.

"The action is in hybrid and that's really where the market is today," he said.

"What we are announcing with adaptive flash is the ability to combine them in a single platform.

"What we offer is a lot more performance, a lot more capacity in a much smaller footprint at a much lower price."

The Adaptive Flash platform provides the performance of flash-only arrays and the capacity of hybrid arrays with the introduction of the CS700 Series arrays and All-Flash Shelf delivering up to 500,000 IOPS, 64 terabytes (TBs) of flash, and a petabyte of capacity.

By minimising performance and capacity tradeoffs, Nimble’s Adaptive Flash platform enables the consolidation of all workloads and eliminates storage silos.

It is based on CASL, Nimble’s patented Cache Accelerated Sequential Layout architecture, and InfoSight, the company’s automated cloud-based management and support system.

The platform is engineered to provide organisations with the highest levels of performance efficiently.

Along with integrated data protection and predictive support, enterprise customers can deploy confidently and seamlessly scale their storage infrastructure as their business grows.

It also leverages InfoSight to recommend the exact amount of resources required as application demands change within an enterprise, while its scale-to-fit approach allows non-disruptive addition of resources, thus avoiding over provisioning, under-utilisation, and increased costs.

In Australia and New Zealand, Nimble has more 50 resellers, 27 staff, 140 customers and 300 channel personnel.

Resellers include Cloud Solutions Group, Data Solutions Group, Aviva, Nexus, Regal IT, Datacom amd Portal IT.

It has also signed Nextgen Distribution as its New Zealand distributor and is looking to sign an Australian distributor in the next six months.

Nimble Storage vice-president APJ, Peter O'Connor, said it was taking a single distributor strategy, while also staying away from the a larger resellers.

"In terms of channel community, we are looking for partners who can bundle technologies with Cisco, Oracle, VMware and Citrix," he said. "We also do a lot of work with Microsoft."

O'Connor said VDI was a massive growth area.

"Nimble storage is a great technology for resellers to use for acquisition of new accounts," he said.

"They use our technology to forge a relationship with our customers and that's a fantastic strategy for our reseller partners."
