Local is best when it comes to Cloud: Pronto

ERP software vendor highlights the importance of data location when considering the Cloud

As Australian businesses continue to adopt the Cloud, Pronto Software marketing manager, Paul Goepfert, said some concerns still remain.

One key issue he highlights is a lack of understanding around where private data is being stored.

“If data is being stored in a foreign country, it increases a company’s exposure to potential data protection issues and security breaches,” he said.

Goepfert feels this is particularly important as Frost and Sullivan is expecting Australia’s Cloud adoption to grow to $380 million by 2017.

To deal with this challenge, Goepfert recommends organisations partner with providers that have a local presence in a region.

If the business is located in Sydney, the data will likewise be hosted in Sydney.

“This is a critical factor that resellers must offer to gain competitive advantage when it comes to cloud implementations,” Goepfert said.

A private discussion

The public Cloud platform is known as a simple, low cost solution with resources on demand that can be self-managed.

Goepfert warns this less expensive approach means the customer has limited control.

He said this is because information stored on the platform does not reside within the customer’s datacentre of choice.

“A private Cloud solution is built with an organisation’s needs in mind, ensuring the company has more control around the security of its corporate documents and private data,” he said.
