Telecom to spend $15 million on datacentre expansion

The investment will add 2500 square metres of new datacentre capacity, doubling the footprint of Revera’s Alexander Road Trentham (ART) tier 3 data centre

Telecom has announced plans for a $15 million expansion of Revera’s Homeland datacentre in Upper Hutt.

The investment will add 2500 square metres of new datacentre capacity, doubling the footprint of Revera’s Alexander Road Trentham (ART) tier 3 data centre. The addition is due for completion in October 2014.

Revera CEO, Robin Cockayne, said the investment follows a period of growth, which has seen it sign 30 government agency clients since its appointment to the all-of-government infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS) panel.

“We lit up ART in May last year and commissioned the second module just 12 months later,” said Cockayne. “Our just-in-time build and fit-out methodology enlivens smaller-sized pods of capacity within the larger facility, which shortens commissioning times and provides more opportunity to embed on-going design and technology improvements.

“Datacentres sit right at the heart of our capability to meet demand for cloud, mobility, video and collaboration services, which is why we’re investing heavily to ensure that between ourselves and Revera, we operate the largest, most comprehensive network of highly resilient facilities in New Zealand,” said Gen-i’s GM for central government, Robin Hartendorp.

The investment in the ART facility follows Telecom’s spend on new datacentres in Christchurch and Auckland, and an expansion of its Dunedin facility.

According to the company, ART, along with other Revera and Gen-i datacentres, will be included as network nodes on Telecom’s Optical Transport Network to create a nationwide virtual computing and network environment.
